In the last decade, the month of March in 2017 and 2019 saw the highest number of instances when the day temperature could touch or crossed 40*C in various weather stations in Maharashtra. In last 10 days of March this year, there were a staggering 64 instances when various locations in the state recorded temperature this high. This was only second to 80 such instances during the last 10 days of March 2017.
Several stations in state especially Beed, Akola, Pune, Lohegaon, Ahmednagar, Solapur and Parbhani, began recording day temperatures higher than 40*C. On one of these days, even Santacruz in Mumbai touched 40.3*C which is an unusual departure of 7.5 degrees. For a coastal station to touch 40*C is rare.
K. Shrivastava, head of the Climate Research Division, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune said that Such systems are generally transient to nature and move quickly. But this system remained quasi-stationery for a week over the Indian region. We have to take major steps to shorten the temperature.
